Alex Mitchell conquered more than 400 miles – including some brutal hills – to complete the Magic-RL Mystery Tour with a smile on her face.
As part of her now annual challenge to raise money for Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, the partner and private client specialist at Watsons Solicitors cycled from Cardiff to Newcastle.
After starting in the Welsh capital, the event took in several other cities that have hosted rugby league’s Magic Weekend, including Liverpool and Manchester, as well as landmarks such as the Angel of the North.
Alex, who was part of a 21-strong team of riders, said: “Despite being the longest challenge I have done, the additional two days helped in a weird way.
“I felt that they were a good warm up for the legs! Because the first day was around 116 miles with some tough climbs in the heat, the subsequent days felt easier in comparison.
“Overall, it was another amazing team effort. We were joined by a few new faces, and they fitted in really well.
“Despite different levels of cycling experience and/or ability, we all got there and conquered a few demons along the way.”
As an avid Liverpool supporter, Alex particularly relished being able to visit Anfield just days after Liverpool Football Club secured the Premier League title.
She continued: “The Liverpool supporting chaps enjoyed it and had a few photographs on our own with the champions wall and Bill Shankly statue.
“I also enjoyed seeing the Angel of the North up close, although there was an awful hill after it, so our smiles quickly left our faces.”
A support team of five was on-hand to help treat sunburn and heat stroke, as well as keep the group hydrated, before the riders headed to St James’ Park.
There the group watched Warrington Wolves battle it out with Wigan Warriors, who secured a narrow 22-20 victory.
Not even defeat for The Wire could take the shine off for Alex, who added: “The result wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be given that Wigan are so strong, and we have a few out with injuries.
“It was also brilliant watching the Warrington Disability youngsters take to the pitch at half-time to play, as this reinforced exactly why we do the ride.”
