Alex Mitchell is only too happy to substitute Las Vegas for Newcastle to raise crucial funds for Warrington Wolves Community Foundation.
The partner and private client specialist at Watsons Solicitors is cycling from Cardiff to the north east as part of the Magic-RL Mystery Tour charity bike ride.
Starting in the Welsh capital, the 400-plus mile event will take in other cities that have hosted rugby league’s magic weekend, including Manchester’s Etihad Stadium and Anfield in Liverpool.
With the Welsh valleys and the Pennines to contend with, the team of 25, including support crew, will be glad to arrive at St James’ Park on Sunday 4 May in time to watch Warrington Wolves tackle Wigan Warriors.
Alex is hoping that the culmination of her hard work results in revenge for Wire, who were beaten 48-24 in the reverse fixture in Vegas back on 1 March.
On the challenge, she said: “I always look forward to it, but with some element of trepidation. I always feel fantastic after finishing the challenge and whilst there are some very low points, the highs outweigh them.
“It’s a great team effort from those taking part in the cycling to the support crew, who give up their time and push everyone on when spirits are low.
“Being an avid Liverpool fan, the chance to stop at Anfield is also something to aim for.”
Speaking about the chance to see Warrington defeat Wigan, Alex continued: “Much like the route, Warrington have had a bit of an up and down season, so it would be amazing to see them get the win.
“I didn’t make it to Vegas when they played them there earlier in the year, but Newcastle is a great venue.”
As part of her race preparations, Alex and some of her team mates participated in the Cheshire Cat Sportive, an 80-mile event that includes the infamous Mop Cow Killer Mile, a 570ft climb featuring a 25 per cent gradient in places.
Alex added: “I try and keep fit generally, and a few of us participated in the Cheshire Cat Sportive in bad weather.
“There are a lot of hills, so it was tough but a good training exercise.”
