A solicitor at a leading Cheshire law firm has helped raise thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in a 180-mile bike ride up hill and down dale all the way to Newcastle.

Alex Mitchell, private client specialist at Warrington-based Watsons Solicitors, was part of the peloton that set out from the home of Warrington Wolves, the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The ride, which was organised to raise funds for the club’s charitable arm, the Warrington Wolves Foundation, started on the Friday with riders arriving in the outskirts of Newcastle the next day.

They then rode the final 10 miles into the city in time to see Wolves beat Wigan Warriors as part of rugby league’s Magic Weekend at St James’s Stadium on the Sunday.

Fuelled by a heady combination of determination and snickers bars, Alex pedalled her way through Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and on into County Durham before finishing on Tyneside.

She said: “As a firm, Watsons is a big supporter of the Warrington Wolves Foundation and all the work it does, so I was more than happy to put my hand up to take part.

“There were a good few nasty climbs as we made our way across the Pennines. We’d ask the ride leader after each if there were many more left, and he’d say ‘just undulations’, but I don’t think any of us believed him by the end of Friday!

“Thankfully we covered most of the hills by the time Saturday rolled round, so that felt much easier.

“I’m not a particularly experienced cyclist. I like a bit of a pootle around on the weekend, but the support and encouragement we all gave each other, as well as from the volunteers driving the van, made all the difference.

“I also really enjoyed all the rugby fans cheering us on that last stretch up to the stadium. It was wonderful support along the way.

“Most importantly we’ve raised more than £7,000 together so far, with hopefully more to come, so I'd like to thank the team here for their donations as well.”
