Watsons Solicitors is helping unite people using the power of memories by backing Warrington Wolves Community Foundation’s In The Sheds initiative.
Based in the heart of the town, the law firm has jumped at the chance to lend its support to 10 sessions at care homes aimed at assisting lonely or isolated individuals build social connectivity.
Organised by probate department members Alex Mitchell, Kristel Clarke, and Jennifer Stewart, the project will empower the people of Warrington.
Private client specialist and partner at Watsons Solicitors, Alex, was only too happy to back the scheme, which has seen sessions held at Whittle Hall, Gainsborough House, and Meadowview homes.
“It’s fantastic that such an important initiative is up and running,” said Alex. “One of the big objectives for us at Watsons is to make everyone, regardless of age, feel part of the town.”
Kristel, Jennifer, and Alex have all attended the meetings, with the latter witnessing a special reunion.
Mike Nicholas MBE, working on behalf of the foundation, met with resident Frank Barrow, the two reacquainted after being sent-off after clashing on Boxing Day 1972 when Warrington tackled Leigh.
“Frank seemed to remember Mike, who was pleased to see a fellow former athlete again, and this time in more friendly circumstances!” said Alex. “It showcased the importance of the gatherings from a social perspective.”
Mike was also in attendance at the most recent gathering at Meadowview Care Home in Penketh.
Kristel said: “It was a lovely, feel-good afternoon. Everyone got involved, looking at memorabilia and watching videos of past games.”
Meanwhile, Warrington born and bred Margery (Madge) Greaves, is the focus of a promotional film that was sponsored by Watsons.
Through the backing of the foundation, Three Elms Care Home resident Madge can attend all home matches of Warrington Wolves.
Speaking to camera, she says: “For a few years, obviously with my age, I hadn’t been, and when I started going again, oh, the best thing in the world.
“It means a lot; it means an awful lot. I can’t wait for Friday or Saturday.”
Madge is just one of more than 280,000 people over the age of 65 living in care homes in the UK, all of which are at risk of isolation from their community.
