A solicitor at a leading Cheshire law firm is to take part in a virtual 5km Santa Dash in aid of the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
The event usually happens in Liverpool city centre, however the restrictions on mass gatherings mean organisers have needed to be a bit more creative this year.
Alex Mitchell, partner and solicitor in the wills and probate department, plans to run 5km on a route of her choosing as part of the fundraiser on 20 December, wearing a full Father Christmas outfit.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has bases in Liverpool, the Wirral and Aintree and provides specialist cancer care for the 2.4m people who live in Merseyside, Cheshire and the Isle of Man.
It isn’t the first time Alex has donned a fancy dress outfit to run and raise money for charity, having taken part in a previous event for a guide dogs charity.
Alex said: “I did the Manchester 10km in a guide dog’s outfit with a big dog’s head on it, bobbing about, and it was a lot of fun; I did quicker with that on than when I’d run it previously without.
“I’m not an experienced runner, I play hockey and that’s about it, but 5km isn’t a challenge like a marathon would be, so I thought it’d make it a bit different to have the costume and play some Christmas music.
“Hopefully I’ll have a trailer to put a sound system on with lights, but whatever happens I’ll play music while I’m running along.
Alex has her own family connection to the centre, but also believes it’s important that firms like hers do their bit to give to charity, particularly in a year like 2020.
Alex added: ‘My Dad received care from Clatterbridge specialists at the Linda McCartney Centre, and he’s doing really well now, but everyone’s lives are touched by cancer in some way. I had a close friend in St Helens who passed away after suffering with cancer, so it’s important that cancer care centres like this are available and supported.
“As a firm we do quite a bit for the Warrington Wolves Foundation and St Rocco’s, but there are lots of causes out there that are deserving of support.”
