Ageing population highlights importance of writing a will

A Cheshire-based wills and probate solicitor thinks that there is no time like the present for getting your affairs in order and writing a will with the age of the population on the rise.

Recently released figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the number of people in England and Wales aged 65 years and over has increased from 9.2 million to 11 million in the last decade.

Similarly, the size of the population aged 90 years and over has also grown, with nearly 100,000 more individuals in this category (527,900) compared to 10 years ago.

Alex Mitchell, partner and a member of the wills and probate department at Warrington-based Watsons Solicitors, feels that, with the age of the population rising, it’s wise to put plans in place for life after you’ve gone.

Alex said: “The figures should act as a real eye-opener for people who haven’t yet got their affairs in order by writing a will.

“Writing a will can be often seen as morbid but having a plan in place for when you’ve passed away is a good idea for a number of reasons.

“By writing a will can help with things such as controlling your estate, making provisions for children, making funeral requests clear, and reducing stress for your next of kin.

“The benefits far outweigh any perceived negatives of preparing for life after you have passed away. Having a will provides individuals with peace of mind.

“Many don’t get around to making a will before it’s too late, so it is recommended that people put procedures in place.”
