Armed with a generous supply of peanut butter Snickers bars, Alex Mitchell is getting back on the saddle to raise funds for the Warrington Wolves Foundation.
The private client specialist at Warrington-based Watsons Solicitors is ready to tackle the gruelling near 200-mile cross-Pennine charity bike ride to Newcastle, titled Tour de Toon.
For the second successive year, Alex will be part of the peloton that sets out from the Halliwell Jones Stadium – home of the Warrington Wolves – in the early hours of Friday 8 July.
Two days of tough terrain await Alex and her fellow fundraisers, who will ride the final 10 miles into Newcastle on Sunday 10 July to see the Wolves tackle the Catalan Dragons at rugby league’s Magic Weekend.
Alex said: “Watsons are the main kit sponsor for the Warrington Wolves Foundation, which does some amazing work for the community, and has been instrumental in helping people with disabilities access sporting opportunities. We support them wholeheartedly in their efforts.
“I was only too happy to stick my hand in the air when it came to volunteering for the ride last year, and I’ve managed to block enough of the trials and tribulations out to agree to do it again!”
Alex will be armed with a potent combination of resolve and chocolate as she looks to make light work of the tour through Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, County Durham, and Tyneside.
She continued: “The camaraderie last year was wonderful, despite us not really knowing each other too well as a group.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to meet up a few times since then and that team spirit has only grown, which will make the experience even more special this time round.
“With a good team around me and sweet treats providing much-needed energy boosts along the way, I’m really looking forward to raising more money for a worthwhile cause.”
As well as preparing herself mentally and physically for the bike ride, Alex has been helping in the Warrington Wolves Foundation’s other fundraising efforts.
The foundation and community interest company, LiveWire, have joined forces to offer men and women in Warrington a chance to join a beginner’s fitness and weight loss programme, called Fit to Tackle.
The tailored 12-week programme explores topics such as mental wellbeing, portion sizes and exercise options.
Alex volunteers as a mentor on the programme and the Fit to Tackle participants recently took part in a step challenge that involved running up and down all of the steps at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
