Watsons Solicitors is turning back the clock as part of its support for Warrington Wolves Community Foundation’s In The Sheds initiative.
The charity is running 10 sessions at care homes and community centres as it aims to unite people using the power of memories.
And Watsons Solicitors has jumped at the chance to lend a hand by sponsoring the scheme, which helps lonely or isolated individuals build social connectivity.
Organised by probate department members Alex Mitchell, Kristel Clarke, and Jennifer Stewart, the support will empower people in the town.
Private client specialist and partner at Watsons Solicitors, Alex, was only too happy to back the initiative.
“It’s really important that everyone, young or old, feels part of Warrington, which is a place that looks out for its own,” said Alex, who raised funds for the foundation by completing the recent Tower to Tower challenge.
“The In The Sheds scheme increases self-esteem and helps make people feel valued through activities framed around reminiscing about their lives in the town.”
There is also a buddy scheme as part of the programme, which utilises the foundation’s ‘Be The Change’ slogan.
Warrington born and bred Margery (Madge) Greaves, is the focus of a promotional video that was sponsored by Watsons Solicitors.
Through the backing of the foundation, Three Elms Care Home resident Madge can attend all home matches of Warrington Wolves.
Speaking to camera, she says: “For a few years, obviously with my age, I hadn’t been, and when I started going again, oh, the best thing in the world.
“It means a lot; it means an awful lot. I can’t wait for Friday or Saturday.”
Madge is just one of more than 280,000 people over the age of 65 living in care homes in the UK, all of which are at risk of isolation from their community.
Alex added: “This is another perfect example of the fine work the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation does. When you hear of Madge’s experiences, it would be a huge shame if she was unable to do something such as attending a rugby league match.
“We jumped at the chance to get involved in the buddy scheme and look forward to helping play a key part in getting others connected to people and places.”
Sam Burgess, Warrington’s head coach, is urging the town to unite as part of the campaign.
On the promotional video, the cross-code international said: “This is about more than just rugby, more than just our town, it’s our club, our community.
“To continue to impact people’s lives, we need your help.
“Because to truly make a difference, you can’t just sit and watch from the sidelines, you can’t wait for the change to happen in front of your eyes.
“You must take action. You must be the one to care.
“So don’t wait for the change. Be The Change.”
